Keerthika Sunchu

Keerthika Sunchu is a graduate student pursuing an MS in Health Informatics at Indiana University Indianapolis. With a background in pharmacy from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad, Keerthika brings a unique blend of clinical knowledge and technical expertise to the field of health informatics.

As a Graduate Research Assistant at the Purkayastha Lab for Health Innovation (PLHI), Keerthika has demonstrated strong leadership and technical skills. She has led the deployment of OpenEMR instances using Docker, enhancing EMR training for over 500 students, and collaborating with external universities to integrate OpenEMR into their curricula. Her expertise in data management is evident through her work on ETL processes, where she utilizes SQL, Python, and Talend OpenStudio to migrate and validate clinical data from MIMIC-IV to OpenEMR, ensuring data integrity and HIPAA compliance.

Keerthika’s technical proficiency spans various programming languages, frameworks, and healthcare data standards. She is skilled in Python, R, SQL, and various markup languages, as well as machine learning libraries and data visualization tools. Her knowledge of healthcare standards such as SNOMED, ICD, LOINC, and FHIR positions her well for tackling complex health informatics challenges.

Currently, Keerthika is working on a capstone project with IU Health, developing a SMART on FHIR application to enhance cirrhosis management. This project showcases her ability to integrate technical skills with clinical needs, designing user interfaces and implementing features to improve patient outcomes.

Keerthika’s commitment to advancing the field of health informatics is further evidenced by her involvement in multiple projects, including healthcare data migration, interoperability solutions, and predictive modeling for diseases like diabetes and stroke. Her work has contributed to publications accepted for presentation at AMIA 2024 (including a Best Paper Award) and IEEE CMBS 2024, highlighting her growing impact in the field.

As a Teaching Assistant at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, Keerthika demonstrates her ability to share knowledge and mentor others in SQL, data analysis, and machine learning. Keerthika Sunchu’s combination of technical skills, healthcare knowledge, and research experience positions her as a rising talent in health informatics, poised to make significant contributions to healthcare technology and data-driven decision-making.
