Electronic Health Records
One of our goals at Purkayastha Laboratory is to develop consolidated Electronic Medical Systems that would cater to the need of every section in a healthcare establishment. A solution that would ensure interoperability between every department such as the Pharmacy and the Ambulatory etc. Over the years, researchers at Purkayastha laboratory have been involved in the development of some Electronic Medical Systems, one of which is OpenMRS.
OpenMRS is an open-source Medical records system that was developed to tackle the challenges faced by the developing countries of the world. Researchers at Purkayastha Laboratory have been actively involved in the development of modules of OpenMRS that can be reused by developers. Currently, we are engaged in research which includes the following projects.
- Visit Notes Analysis:
This project is based on the results drawn from Health Records. This analysis recognizes data that falls into the following categories: Problem, Treatment, and Test. OpenMRS consists of module names visit notes analysis that is used to detect these entities in Visit Notes of the patient. Following the identification of entities, they are used to provide snapshot summaries of the information which is held in larger Health Record Systems. To summarize, the main motto of this project is to serve the purpose of reduction in the time taken by the Physician/Practitioner to come to a conclusion on the medical status of the patient. Visit note analysis was focused on the radiology reports, the motto was to detect supervised or unsupervised machine learning techniques that can be used for labeling the text in the report that can help the referring physician.
- Libre Health EHR System:
The LibreHealth has 3 components LibreHealth Radiology, LibreHealth EHR, and LibreHealth toolkit. We have been contributing to LibreHealth radiology and LibreHealth toolkit projects.
The LibreHealth Radiology system aims at adding capabilities of a Radiology Information system (RIS) into LibreHealth Toolkit. The main objectives of this project are to develop a module capable of managing information in a radiology department. This includes identification of the radiology department’s workflow according to radiology experts, architecture that supports basic radiology’s department services, implement the module as suggested by architecture, by using free and open-source software and satisfy module’s quality parameters set by the community.

The LibreHealth Toolkit software serves as the foundational API and data model for many other health IT applications. It will be frequently (but not always) utilized as an upstream product for building other LibreHealth software. The toolkit is a fork of the OpenMRS Platform and builds on its reliability while improving performance and ease of installation and use.

LibreHealth EHR application is a clinically focused open source Electronic Health Record System which is designed to be easy to use and is customizable for use in a variety of Health Care settings. It builds on strength by adapting many of the proven user experiences built with OpenMRS. It is designed to be a modern, out of the box, easy-to-use experience for Healthcare professionals in their daily work.

- Student Team-based learning monitor (STLM):
Even though online education has gone main-stream, fewer academic leaders have expressed that online education is critical to their long-term strategies. Most attributed this expression to the observation that students enrolled in online education were less engaged compared to their peers from face-to-face classes. A multitude of online engagement techniques: team-based learning and active learning strategies using virtual labs have been employed for this purpose.
We propose to pilot path-breaking changes in Health Informatics Management (HIM) courses using discipline-based education research. We have selected two courses from the HIM program (HIM M200 – Database Design for HIM and HIM M220 – Health informatics for Decision Support) on which content will be developed for Guided inquiry learning. Through the SEIRI seed grant, we will develop a student team-based learning monitor (STLM) within the LibreHealth EHR system, to track the activities from students to complete a given task and suggest ways to do it in a better way, using mouse simulation. The project applies inquiry-based learning methods that combine problem-based learning, team-based learning and process-oriented guided inquiry learning (POGIL). The project will identify changes required for the two courses and develop a needs assessment for the STLM tool in the EHR. Engagement will be measured using cognitive, behavioral, and emotional measures.
After developing new content and the STLM tool, we will pilot test the two courses and monitor the student evaluations using the STLM tool in Fall 2018. Students will provide evaluations of the tool as part of focused group discussions conducted by the undergraduate and graduate researchers of our team. This way, it helps in achieving our main objective of increasing the engagement of students in online education in the Health Informatics and Health Information Management areas.
